Mountains in Bulgaria

The incredible beauty and grandeur of Bulgarian mountains challenges the will and strength of thousands of hikers and nature-lovers and rewards them with stunning views of high peaks, fresh meadows, crystal-clear mountain water and the specific feeling of closeness to nature that cannot be compared to nothing else. Each mountain in Bulgaria has its specific character. The Balkan range, separating Bulgaria in a southern and northern part extends from the western Bulgarian border to the Black Sea. The Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopian mountains are a part of the Rila-Rhodopian range occupying a large territory in southern Bulgaria.

The Rila Mounatian

The Rila Mountain is the highest in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula. The mountain’s alpine relief, the beautiful glacier lakes and waterfalls attract visitors from all over the world. The Seven Rila Lakes circus is among the most remarkable natural formations in Rila. The mountain offers excellent conditions for all kinds of winter sports. The most popular ski resorts in Rila are Borovets, Malyovitsa, Semkovo and Panichishte. The Rila monastery, situated in the foothills of the mountain, is an architectural monument of immense cultural and historical significance.

The Pirin Mountain

Pirin is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria, situated in its southwestern part. Pirin’s unique nature is characterized by imposing high peaks, beautiful circuses and diverse flora and fauna. A large part of the mountain is covered by the Pirin National Park. The conditions for winter sports in the Pirin Mountain are perfect. The Bansko winter resort offers good opportunities both for skiing and snowboarding. The small picturesque town of Melnik, famous for its unique technology for wine-production, is nestling in the Pirin’s foothills. Sandanski is a spa resort in Pirin, offering ideal conditions for spa vacations and balneological treatment.

The Rhodopes

The Rhodopes, situated in southern Bulgaria, are characterized by hilly landscape with coniferous forests and broad pastures. The Rhodopes have been inhabited by Thracian tribes since deep Antiquity. Many traces from the Thracian culture have been discovered in the Rhodopes –the ancient city of Perpericon, Thracian sanctuaries, golden treasures and pottery. The famous ski resort of Pamporovo is situated in the Western part of the Rhodopes, The towns of Devin and Velingrad are well-developed centres for spa tourism. The authentic atmosphere of past centuries has been preserved in the villages of Gela, Stoykite, Shiroka Luka and Trigrad. Each summer bagpipe festivals with Bulgarian and foreign participation take place in these villages.

The Balkan Range

The Balkan range (Stara Planina) is the longest mountain in Bulgaria, separated in Eastern, Central and Western parts. The Central Balkan National Park occupies a great territory of the mountain. It is meant to preserve the unique nature of the Balkan range. Make a trip to the Balkan Range to step into the magic of its century-old forests, babbling creeks and lush fragrant meadows. The picturesque Balkan towns of Kazanluk, Koprivshtitsa and Gabrovo, prosperous craft centres in the past, are now keepers of Bulgarian spirit and traditions. The town of Hissar is a renowned spa resort in the central part of the Balkan range.

Summer holiday at Bulgaria’s Sourthern Black Sea coast

27.07.2013

Beach tourism is more than just a silky coastline, a hotel, sea and fun. It definitely concerns all the landmarks which the respective region offers. Both Northern and Southern Black Sea coastal resorts in Bulgaria offer a lot. If you have read our guide to the Northern Black Sea, then make sure that you have at least one day to experience the beauty of the Southern Black Sea.

Landmarks at Southern Black Sea coast

1. Begliktash

Begliktash is an ancient Thracian sanctuary. It is located near Primosko, only 3km away from the resort. The sanctuary is interesting and you don’t have the chance to see such an interesting sanctuary every day. This unique rock structure was made by the Thracians who thus defined where their temple, calendar are located.

2. Charming Old town of Nessebar

This is one of my landmarks. The old town in Nessebar is an architectural and historic reserve. Nessebar is an ancient town which was created 3200 years ago. Traces of Thracian and Roman presence can be seen anywhere. You can also see remnants of Byzantium baths. Nessebar is an impressive town with a rich history and unique atmosphere. It is a resort which combines the modern and the ancient pieces in a remarkable way. No matter whether you have a holiday in Nessebar or Sunny Beach, St.Vlas, Ravda, you should definitely spend a day in Nessebar and I am sure that you will not regret it. The architecture of Bulgarian houses from the Revival period, the mystery around the Roman remnants and the ancient churches are intertwined. Some of the most popular landmarks in Nessebar are the impressive church “St.Sophia”, the church “Joan the Baptist”, the church “St.Stefan” and others.

3. Ropotamo River

Ropotamo River is a favourite place for those love fishing, but it’s also a beautiful place where you can just enjoy the serenity and the magic sounds of the nature. It is considered that the river is named after the Greek Goddess Ro. Ro means “run” and “potamo” means a river. You can consider a boat tour to feel the full beauty of the river. Undoubtedly the Ropotamo river is most famous for its water lilies. They are so gentle and they gracefully float on the water surface that you will soon find out how unrivalled this experience is.

4. Pomorie Lake

%RIMG%Pomorie Lake is located to the north of Pomorie and it’s just 20km away from Bourgas. The salt museum is located at the banks of the lake. You will find a nature reserve in a closely proximity. It is an interesting fact that Via Pontika passes through the lake. It is a real air highway for migrating birds from Europe to Africa. 269 different bird species were observed.

5. Alepu

The swamp Alepu is located only 6.5km away from Sozopol beach resort. Literally the name means “the swamp of the fox”. This area is full of many rare birds.
